Abhyanga & Panchakarma:

Another  important aspect to Ayurveda is Panchakarma. Panch meaning five and Karma meaning actions. Traditionally these practices are performed under the supervision of a Qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner and offer mainly two routes for Dis-ease Treatment: Shamana= Pacification of the vitiated Dosha & Shodhana= Body Purification or Detoxification. These treatments for Detoxification & removal of Ama= Toxins, are Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya & Raktamokshana= Blood Letting.

The “main seats” of the 3 Dosha’s are: Kapha= Chest & Stomach, Pitta= Upper Digestion ie. Liver and Small Interstine & Vatta= Lower Digestion ie. Large Intestine. Abhyanga (Oil Massage) & Swedhana (Steam) assist the Shamana process, by bringing Ama “out of hiding” and to the organs of elimination ie. Mouth, Anus and Pores of the skin. For this process the patient undergoes the prescribed Panchakarma Therapy…

(1) Since Vatta is the mover of all the elements and creates the potential for Dosha vitiation, Basti therapy is the most powerful of the five main procedures. Basti, introduces Medicated substances into to the colon through the Anus for the expulsion of Vatta-related Ama.

(2) Pitta related disorders are cleared with Virechana or Therapeutic Purgation of the related organs. This is also facilitated with the intake of Ayurvedic Herbs and relieves Pitta-ralated Ama. Toxins in the blood are removed by a process of Raktamokshana, however this process of Blood Letting is to be administered by a highly skilled Practitioner.

(3) Kapha related disorders are treated with Vamina or Therapeutic Vomiting is the natural urge for the Stomach to purge, with the assistance of Ayurvedic Herbs. Nasya is the introduction of Medicated substances into the Nose. This process helps dis-lodge Ama from the Mouth, Throat and Sinuses to help eliminate Kapha-related toxins from this area.
